Edmonton is a lively and culturally active city, with a greater metropolitan area population of almost 1,000,000. Its river valley offers one of the largest metropolitan park areas anywhere, and superb recreational opportunities both in summer and winter. The winters are cold, but sunny and dry: the University and Edmonton provide excellent indoor facilities, including study areas, restaurants, drinking places and shops. Summer is pleasantly warm and features many special events, such Heritage Days, Jazz City, the ArtWorks, and the hugely successful Fringe Theatre and Folk Music Festivals. Edmonton is renowned for theatre, with a surprising number of companies and venues for a city of its size (led by the nationally prominent Citadel Theatre). Music and dance are well represented, with the Edmonton Symphony, Edmonton Opera, Alberta Ballet and many smaller companies. Rental accommodation is very reasonably priced by Canadian and international standards.
